Legal Information for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Friday 20th February 2015 07:30

Island families have a long history of extended family members playing a big role in raising children. However, it is becoming more common for grandparents to take on the role of primary caregiver to their grandchildren.

In 2014, CLIA received funding from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program to create a legal booklet for grandparents raising their grandchildren.

CLIA staff conducted telephone surveys, online surveys, and focus groups to hear what grandparents need directly from grandparents themselves. We are very grateful to the grandparents who shared their experiences, perspectives, and wisdom with us on this project.  We also want to thank all of the organizations, government staff, and individuals who helped us to ensure the information is accurate and appropriate.
