Public Legal Education and Information Officer, $35,000 p.a.

The Public Legal Education and Information Officer ensures that clients’ telephone, digital, and in-person inquiries are answered promptly and accurately using plain language. When legal advice is required, the PLEI Officer will provide a Lawyer Referral using the system that CLIA administers on behalf of the Law Society of PEI. Under the mentorship of the existing staff, and using an experiential learning and continuous improvement process, the PLEI Officer will learn the tasks required to sustain a successful PLEI service, including: confidential client service; conflict resolution skills; proposal writing; coordination of training programs; staff scheduling; office administration; financial management; database management; outreach to the public; and reporting results.

Preference will be given to applicants who qualify for the SkillsPEI Graduate Mentorship Program.

Purpose:

Community Legal Information Association of PEI Inc., often called CLIA, is a registered charity that has been in operation since 1985. We provide information, referrals, and support to Islanders on legal issues. Our goal is to provide Islanders with understandable and useful information about our laws and the justice system. Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) is a discipline that uses clear language to inform and educate the public about Canadian laws and the legal system.

Duties:          

  • The Public Legal Education and Information Officer ensures that clients’ telephone, digital, and in-person inquiries are answered promptly and accurately using plain language.
  • When legal advice is required, the PLEI Officer will provide a Lawyer Referral using the system that CLIA administers on behalf of the Law Society of PEI.
  • Under the mentorship of the existing staff, and using an experiential learning and continuous improvement process, the PLEI Officer will learn the tasks required to sustain a successful PLEI service, including: confidential client service; conflict resolution skills; proposal writing; coordination of training programs; staff scheduling; office administration; financial management; database management; outreach to the public; and reporting results.

 Inquiry Line and Lawyer Referral Service (LRS):                                                        

  • Respond to legal information requests (CLIA receives almost 4,000 inquiries annually from the general public, community organizations, private businesses and government agencies).
  • Deal courteously with LRS requests while triaging to ensure the service is not misused.  
  • Identify & provide appropriate referrals and communicate details to lawyers and clients.
  • Ensure that concerns from lawyers and clients are immediately forwarded to the Executive Director.
  • In collaboration with other staff, manage and improve LRS information and processes.
  • Administer LRS procedures in a clear, confidential, and accountable manner.

Basic requirements:

  • University degree, or an acceptable combination of skills and experience.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in problem identification and response.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in a multi-faceted, demanding work environment.
  • Aptitude to absorb and use new and complex information quickly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and enjoy teamwork.
  • Access to reliable transportation.

Assets:

  • Working knowledge of spoken and written French, and other languages.
  • Experience working with community and government organizations.
  • Skill in maintaining focus and confidentiality in an open office setting.
  • Experience dealing with people who may be upset and in crisis.
  • Interest in legal issues and community well-being.
