"CLIA is pleased to partner with the Province to offer more tailored support for tenants facing difficulties related to housing," said Ellen Mullally, executive director of CLIA. "Housing needs can contribute to other social problems. Ensuring that Islanders are well educated about tenant rights and have adequate supports to address their problems regarding their housing is critical.”

The provincial government and the Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island (CLIA) are collaborating to increase support for Island renters by creating a tenant support worker position.

Seeing an increasing need for more tailored legal information and support for tenants, the Province approached CLIA to provide tenants more help with rental concerns, support navigating the Rental of Residential Tenants complaint process, as well as linking to housing supports.

“We are extremely pleased to offer this additional help for Island tenants,” said Finance Minister Heath MacDonald. “CLIA’s new tenant support worker will assist Islanders with various rental questions, ranging from how to approach dealing with the Office of the Director of Residential Tenants, to registering with Family and Human Services for affordable housing.”

CLIA is a non-profit registered charity, which provides free legal information to Islanders across the province.

”CLIA is pleased to partner with the Province to offer more tailored support for tenants facing difficulties related to housing," said Ellen Mullally, executive director of CLIA.  "Housing needs can contribute to other social problems. Ensuring that Islanders are well educated about tenant rights and have adequate supports to address their problems regarding their housing is critical. ”

The organization already provides this type of support but will now be able to play a bigger role in helping Island renters. CLIA will also be collaborating with IRAC to deliver workshops about PEI’s Rental of Residential Property Act for both tenants and landlords and will  develop easy to understand materials about  tenant rights to be available in print and online. CLIA will be sharing more information regarding the launch of an accompanying web resource and phone line dedicated to tenant support for Islanders.
