The Coalition
In 1998, a Coalition of organizations was formed to address the policy and protocol deficits in the area of woman abuse. This Coalition determined to facilitate a response to the McQuaid Inquiry and to focus its initial efforts specifically on woman abuse, as opposed to family violence in general. Family Violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial. The Coalition's initial work is focussed on all forms of abuse towards women in relationships. This preliminary work will facilitate the development of tools and partnerships to aid further work towards policies and procedures for responding to specific groups experiencing violence both within and outside family relationships.
The organizations that came together include:
- Transition House Association
- Victim Services
- Woman Abuse and the PEI Legal System Research Team of the Muriel McQueen Ferguson Centre for Family Violence Research
- Aboriginal Women's Association
- PEI Nurses Association
- RCMP
- Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention
- The Learning Centre
- Family Violence Consultant for the Province of PEI
- PEI Inter-Ministerial Women's Secretariat
- Community Legal Information Association
- PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women
Organizational Goal
The goal of the Coalition is to reduce violence towards women by:
- encouraging safe, effective and appropriate responses to victims of family violence; and
- encouraging disclosure and intervention at the earliest point.
This goal will be carried out in 5 phases.
